The team manager of the Supersport team confirms the upcoming bike change

The production version is expected in the coming months

Since the release of the R7 and especially with the filing of numerous names related to the Yamaha R series, many are eagerly awaiting to see the Iwata manufacturer’s take on the sporty roadster with an R9.

After much discussion, we were almost there for this 2024 vintage. But the three-tuned brand offered us a neo-retro fairing version with the XSR900 GP.

However, while World Superbike Championship riders were recently in Portimao, rumors of a bike change at Yamaha in Supersport spread like wildfire. Paddock whispers suggested that the Japanese manufacturer would abandon its four-cylinder R6 from the 2025 season for a new model based around the 890 cc CP3 three-cylinder engine.

The British magazine Motorcycle News, confirmed that a change would indeed take place next season. While they didn’t delve into specifics, understandable enough, they confirmed that the R9 would be in play and that the model to be used in WorldSSP is already in an advanced stage of development.

However, to enter a bike into competition, it must also be distributed to the general public. From Japan, it’s assured that the production R9 is already ready and simply awaiting its launch, which could come in the fall.

For now, we don’t have technical information on the model, but since the sportbike is intended for competition, we can expect the technical modifications to be more extreme than those on the XSR900 GP or the one made on the R7.

In other words, it’s only a matter of time before Yamaha officially unveils this R9.
